ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION AND PURPOSE
Optimal management of antithrombotic therapy in older patients with coronary artery disease is imperative to reduce cardiovascular events and bleeding complications. There are clinical controversies surrounding the choice and dose of antiplatelet agent, duration of dual antiplatelet therapy, and use of combination of antiplatelet and anticoagulant medications. This case-based session will present updated clinical studies and recommendations, as well as incorporate active learning to discuss risk/benefit assessments about pharmacological treatment and management in older adults. This information pertains to pharmacists in all pharmacy practice settings, including ambulatory, long-term, community, and hospital settings.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE
At the conclusion of this application-based activity, participants should be able to:
- List risk factors for bleeding in older patients with coronary artery disease.
- Compare and contrast antiplatelet choice and duration in older patients with coronary artery disease.
- Describe the appropriate use of triple antithrombotic therapy (ie. antiplatelets and an anticoagulant) in older adults.
- Create a patient care plan for antithrombotic management of coronary artery disease, including medication selection, monitoring, and education.
