Drug Enforcement Administration Updates and Understanding the Regulatory Development Process
DEA implements and enforces controlled substances laws and regulations of the United States (known collectively as the Controlled Substances Act (CSA)). The CSA and its implementing regulations are designed to prevent, detect, and eliminate the diversion of controlled substances and listed chemicals into the illicit market while providing for the legitimate medical, scientific, research, and industrial needs of the United States. Within DEA sits the Diversion Control Division, whose primary focus is on ensuring the compliance and enforcement of DEA registrants. The Diversion Control’s Regulatory Drafting Section is the sole section within DEA responsible for the review, drafting, and updating of regulations to enforce the CSA. Understanding the regulatory drafting process, the use of both laws and regulations in compliance and enforcement, and the current priorities of DEA when it comes to updating the regulations will assist those in the medical field with understanding DEA’s role as a partner in ensuring public health and safety. Additionally, having an overview of the current state of drug abuse and dependence in the country and DEA’s efforts to educate and inform the public will provide participants with a greater understanding of how the issues DEA sees everyday play into the development of new regulations and the reassessment of existing ones.

CPE Credit:You must complete the post-test and evaluation by the expiration date to receive credit. You have three attempts to achieve a 75% or higher on the post-test. ASCP reports CPE attainment to ACPE and NABP via the CPE Monitor system. The course should be posted within 24-48 hours of evaluation completion. It is the responsibility of the participant to provide their correct date of birth (MMDD format) and NABP e-Profile ID on their member or guest profile on the ASCP Website.
