The Power of Diversity in Pseudomonas Resistance
Resistant gram-negative pathogens with perpetually evolving mechanisms continue to cause millions of infections annually in the United States. Older adults with multiple comorbidities receiving polypharmacy and those who are frequently exposed to the healthcare system are especially vulnerable to infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This dilemma presents unique challenges for senior care and consultant pharmacists who care for these patients. Throughout this presentation, clinicians will identify and interpret commonly occurring mechanisms of resistance and apply best clinical practices to optimize therapy for the older adult population.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this application-based activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe recent epidemiological trends of infections caused by drug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa
- Review the mechanisms of resistance of Pseudomonas aeruginosas
- Apply recent IDSA guidance to optimize therapy for infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa with difficult-to-treat resistance
- Formulate an optimal antibiotic treatment plan for an older adult infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa
