A String of Clinical Pearls: Utilizing Oral Oncolytics in the Older Adult
Oral oncolytics are now a common component of cancer care for older patients with advanced cancer when a new treatment regimen is needed. Many of the solid tumors in older patients may respond to new oral oncolytic therapy, however not without side effects and other challenges to maintain patient adherence. These cutting-edge medications are created specifically for cellular targets to maximize efficiency while attempting to reduce systemic side effects. As new medications become available, it is important for healthcare professionals to be made aware of all the intricacies of each medication class for improved clinical decision making. This proposed activity will describe some of the important areas (i.e., clinical pearls) to be considered when oral oncolytics are prescribed for older adult patients with cancer.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this application-based activity, participants should be able to:
- Discuss the role of select oral oncolytics in the treatment of cancer.
- Identify the mechanism of action, adverse effect potential, and pharmacokinetic drug-drug interactions for select oral oncolytics
- Summarize clinical pearls of select oral oncolytics when caring for the older adult population.
- Describe the challenges of utilizing oral oncolytic medications in older adults.

Senior Care Pharmacists who provide expert advice on the use of medications to individuals and older adults and are committed to providing person-centered care, considering the complex interrelationships between disease states, nutrition, medications, and other variables.
