TARGET AUDIENCE
The purpose of this webinar is to improve knowledge regarding assessment and treatment of catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI). This webinar will build a foundation of knowledge by first reviewing appropriate indications for catheters, discussing different types of catheters, and considering CAUTI risk differences between catheter types. Then, using a patient case, we will apply diagnostic criteria for CAUTI, and discuss diagnostic challenges in complex patients. Next, we will select an appropriate treatment, taking into account patient specific factors. Finally, we will discuss educational and stewardship activities that pharmacists can use to optimize antimicrobial use in CAUTI.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this application-based activity, participants should be able to:
- Assess whether urinary catheter use is appropriate.
- Discuss types of catheters and the risk of urinary tract infection with each type.
- Evaluate urinary symptoms, non-urinary symptoms, and urine diagnostic information to assess a urinary tract infection.
- Select an appropriate antimicrobial regimen for a patient with a catheter-associated urinary tract infection.
- Review activities that pharmacists can implement to optimize antimicrobial use in catheter-associated urinary tract infection.
