The Plein Memorial Lecture recognizes a distinguished researcher, clinician, or educator, that has made important contributions related to improving the care for older adults. This lecture honors Dr. Joy Plein, a pioneer and innovator in geriatric pharmacy education and practice. She and her husband developed a visionary course in long-term care pharmacy in 1973 at the University of Washington School of Pharmacy, which evolved into a formal training program known as the Plein Certificate in Geriatric Pharmacy. In 2016, a generous gift by Joy Plein established the Plein Center for Geriatric Pharmacy Research, Education and Outreach at the University of Washington School of Pharmacy.
