Target Audience:
Dementia with Lewy bodies is the second most common type of progressive and neurodegenrative dementia. There is currently no cure and the current treatment only provides for symptomatic improvement of cognitive and non-cognitive symptoms. Deep understanding of the disease complexity and nuances of the available nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic modalities will provide tools for pharmacists to provide high quality, comprehensive, patient-centered care for individuals suffering from dementia with Lewy bodies and to provide appropriate counselling regarding disease, available therapies, and treatment goals to patients, families and caregivers.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this application-based activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe the clinical presentations and complications of dementia with Lewy bodies.
- Design an appropriate treatment plan for cognitive, neuropsychiatric symptoms, orthostatic hypotension and constipation in patients with dementia with Lewy bodies.
- Design an appropriate treatment plan for motor symptoms in patients with dementia with Lewy bodies.
- Provide appropriate counseling points to patients with dementia with Lewy bodies, their family and caregivers.
