Target Audience:
Chronic heart failure is a
common diagnosis that affects older adults. This interactive, case based session,
will review the current guideline-directed medical therapy for patients with
heart failure with reduced (HFrEF) and preserved (HFpEF) ejection fraction. The
session will include a discussion of two newer agents for the treatment
of HFrEF, sacubitril/valsartan and ivabradine, with an emphasis on
appropriate utilization and monitoring in older adults.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this application-based activity, participants should
be able to:
- Explain the pathophysiology behind the development of chronic heart failure.
- List lifestyle changes used in the treatment of chronic heart failure.
- Describe current guideline-directed medical therapy for patients with chronic heart failure, including the place in therapy of sacubitril/valsartan and ivabradine.
- Apply the principals of pharmacotherapy for chronic heart failure to patient cases.
