Target Audience:
This session will be delivered by a clinical pharmacy specialist on an
Addiction Consult, Prescription Opioid Safety, and Benzodiazepine Taper Team.
Participants managing older adults prescribed benzodiazepines seeking to
improve safety in this vulnerable population may benefit from attending this
session. Using a case-based approach, the presenter will discuss the prevalence
and risks associated with benzodiazepine use in older adults and other special
populations, examine the evidence and clinical care models for safe and
effective tapering, discuss non-benzodiazepine alternatives, review techniques
to assess willingness and motivation to taper, and offer strategies to design
individualized and supported benzodiazepine taper care plans.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this application-based activity, participants should be
able to:
- Describe the prevalence of benzodiazepine use and risks associated with adverse outcomes in older adults and other special populations
- Review the evidence and patient care models for safe and effective benzodiazepine tapers
- Discuss non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic alternatives to benzodiazepines
- Utilize the Ask-Tell-Ask approach and motivational interviewing techniques to assess patient willingness to taper benzodiazepines
- Design an individualized and supported benzodiazepine taper care plan

How to Earn Credit:
BCGP Credit: Per the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS),
all pharmacists seeking BCGP Recertification have ONE attempt to achieve a 70%
or higher on the 10-question post-test.
CPE Credit: You must complete the post-test and evaluation by May 1, 2019 at 11:59 pm ET to receive credit. ASCP reports CPE attainment to ACPE and NABP via the CPE Monitor system. The course should be posted within 24-48 hours of evaluation completion. It is the responsibility of the participant to provide their correct date of birth (MMDD format) and NABP e-Profile ID on their member or guest profile on the ASCP Website.
