Target Audience: This activity is intended for senior care pharmacists interested in reviewing the diagnostic criteria and treatment options for anemia in the older adult. The presentation will begin with a discussion on how blood components change and why patients may be more prone to anemic conditions at an older age. Through collaborative practice agreements, recognize which laboratory values can be ordered to diagnosis anemia. While all anemias will be included for reference, we will focus on the top three most commonly seen in older adults: iron deficient, vitamin B12 deficient and anemia of chronic conditions. A brief patient case will be included for each to gauge the audience’s knowledge and understanding.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this application-based activity, participants should be
able to:
- Review the morphological characteristics of blood components in an older adult with anemia.
- Recognize the signs, symptoms, and laboratory manifestations associated with anemia.
- Characterize the common causes of anemia that occur in older adults.
- Apply guidelines to select appropriate therapy and monitoring given patient case scenario.
