Target Audience: The majority of cancers diagnosed in the United States are in adults older than 65 years of age. Caring for the elderly poses clinical challenges as physiologic changes occur as part of the aging process. There is also a lack of oncology clinical trial data including geriatric patients to guide pharmacists on appropriate intervention strategies in this important population. The audience will be provided with a brief review of general principles to consider when caring for a geriatric cancer patient, an analysis of various assessment tools that may be used, and tips on supportive care interventions suitable for an elderly cancer patient.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this application-based activity, participants should be able to:
- Discuss the general approach a pharmacist should take when evaluating a geriatric cancer patient
- Evaluate the geriatric assessment tools and their utility in oncology patients
- Select appropriate supportive care strategies when caring for a geriatric cancer patient
- Apply guideline and treatment recommendations to a patient case.
